One day shy of being two full months in quarantine and we are still hanging in there! I'm still in my happy place of having everyone at home all the time, organizing/cooking/cleaning and having nowhere specific to be and am honestly pretty sad about when the day comes when we aren't in quarantine anymore. The kids are having the best time making all kinds of memories while playing together, doing school work, cooking, watching movies and playing outside when the weather allows us to. John is still working from home all day every day (which also makes me the happiest!) and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
With all that said about being in my happy place ....I have had the most DIFFICULT time getting out of bed and getting going in the morning. Because we don't have to rush around and there's no specific place to be, I definitely take advantage and roll out of bed quite a bit later than usual. I'm not real proud of this, even though it has been pretty refreshing. John is always working already by the time I come downstairs and the kids have even gained some independence and started putting together some of their own breakfasts. (Hey, I'm teaching them valuable life lessons right?!) Like I said, I'm not proud of this, but we are making it!
The only thing we are really in need of are the kids and John getting hair cuts. John has been able to schedule one at the salon toward the end of the month but I'm still trying to get the kids scheduled in. The boys may be getting a haircut courtesy of mom here pretty soon if we aren't able to get one scheduled. I do not envy salons right now with the amount of work they have to catch up on along with all the guidelines they need to follow.
We are continuing to order takeout about once or twice a week and take a couple trips into town for various outings. I am still the only one going into the grocery store for certain items but we are mainly sticking with grocery pickup. Indiana has started the "opening" process but we are still sitting tight for a bit before we start going back out to a lot of places. Even though the openings have started, we have had a couple of our major summer activities cancelled: VBS at our church and Camp Tecumseh for Mellany & Johnny. We are super sad about this, but I have no doubt we will find something to do during those times.
This last Friday we even took a trip to urgent care because Johnny gashed his head pretty bad and needed several stitches....more on that below! Never a dull moment with this Barrett circus!! Here's a few pictures showing what we've been doing....
We may not have a stockpile of Clorox wipes, but I've got pectin for freezer jam!! We are hoping to start picking some strawberries around the end of the month!
I've got 2 boys that are always eager to help in the kitchen...
I made this
chocolate cobbler for dessert one night and it was amazing!!! So easy and soooo delicious, especially with some vanilla ice cream.
I did make a trip to Lowe's to quickly grab some flowers for our pots...one of my favorite spring things to do!
Just a man and his dog...
John built a small work bench in the barn for the kids to "work" on while they are out there with him....they are going to make the best memories using it!
We celebrated Simon's 6th Birthday....social distancing style! To not be able to give that birthday boy a hug was painful! We have so missed being able to be with our "Framily" more often.
Charlie working on his farm...
The kids made breakfast for me one morning :)
Mellaany's dance class has been having spirit weeks....this last week was wear your favorite costume. The boys even got into it and participated some!
Whenever I make sandwiches, Charlie always asks if he can have some peanut butter. I've been trying to do a better job of saying "yes" lately because we are having to say "no" to SO MUCH.....so, I grabbed a spoon, let him dip it in the jar and he was so happy!

After finishing up dinner on Friday night we started getting ready for our movie night. I was cleaning up the kitchen while the kids went upstairs to change into pajamas. John had just stepped into the bathroom when we all of the sudden heard Johnny scream. By the way he screamed, I knew it was bad and started running upstairs.....When I got to him, all I saw was his scared little face screaming and blood. I immediately scooped him up, started downstairs and hollered for John to grab some paper towels. I told Johnny he needed to close his eyes because the blood was literally running all over the right side of his face. We made it into the kitchen at the same time and John literally took one look at Johnny's head and said everyone get your shoes and get in the car. (The 5 of us have never loaded up a vehicle so fast before!!) I held Johnny in the car on the way to urgent care which took us about 10 minutes. We had called ahead to let them know we were coming and to get any specific directions we might need....because CoVid-19....As soon as we got inside, the nurse and dr came out to the front check in area to look at his head to see if it was something they could handle or if they needed to send us to the ER. They determined we should stay and within 5 minutes we were back in the room. Johnny was understandably nervous and shaking (which is what I do when I'm nervous and in pain) so I did my best to help him breathe and stay calm. The nurses and doctor were all fantastic and explained everything to him and answered all of his questions. They also answered all of my questions (and I had a lot!) because I was not about to have another Mellany "incident" where the doctor decides to not numb the area fully!! About a half hour and 9 stitches later, we were headed back out the door. The lady at the front desk had just ordered cookies and sent one with Johnny, which was just the sweetest thing! Johnny was so brave and stayed calm during the entire procedure. At one point while he was getting numbed with the injections, he told the doctor "I know you are giving me a lot of shots right now!".... :) While his stitches definitely make him nervous, I do think that the whole incident has helped give him some confidence because of how brave and calm he was while getting the stitches. He is wearing his wound with pride (he calls it his caterpillar) and I honestly think he feels pretty cool with it. I also think he is loving the extra attention he's getting from it. :)
(After having Johnny tell us and show us a re-enactment of what happened.....it turns out that he was playing with Winston in our room when he started falling and Winston jumped on him....which resulted in his fall being "broke" by the corner of our bedroom wall. There is not one speck of blood or dent, or paint chip anywhere to be found on the wall, carpet, etc!!! Just unbelievable to me because I had blood all over my shirt!!)
Also noteworthy.....Mellany got 4 staples in her head last year on May 13
Johnny got 9 staples on his head on May 8
From now on, during the month of May, the Barretts will be in bubble wrap!
We spent Saturday in the barn this past weekend. John is working on another work bench and the kids were tinkering away.
And Sunday was Mother's Day! I ordered a cake from our favorite local bakery for the kids to decorate and they loved it! We made phone calls to our mamas.....I got Starbucks and donuts in bed, opened up some gifts from John and the kids, John cooked dinner and we spent most of the day being lazy! The most perfect Mother's Day Sunday!
The night ended with a sleepover in Mellany's room....can you tell these boys are related?! :)
You can tell Monday is going to be good when fort building is involved!
Here's to an uneventful week with no injuries!!!!
Happy Monday!!
