First Day of School 2020: Mellany & Johnny

It may not look anything like last school year, but it's back to school for the Barrett kids!!! I always have such a hard time with going back to school and this year is no exception. With the added requirement of masks and social distancing, it absolutely breaks my mama heart and I've shedded more tears than I care to admit (mostly because my Johnny is heading to kindergarten but also because CoVid). The kids do not care one bit and are just ecstatic to be back in school so that definitely helps!

One of the biggest changes for this year is that there are no parents allowed in the building. This means no back to school night, no walking them in to their classes on the first day, no helping in the classrooms, etc. So, two nights before school started, we started practicing getting off the bus and finding their doors (the kids still wanted to ride the bus even with mask requirements!) and took a few pictures in front of the building.

Back to School Brinner!
I follow a blogger who has an annual breakfast for dinner and I needed something to focus my energy on this year instead of focusing on most of the negative things about school starting; and this was the perfect event. I bought a few decorations, purchased a sticker set for each kiddo, pulled out all the breakfast items I could and the kids thought it was the best thing ever! Even their puppy "lovies" and "Ashley" came to dinner. It was so much fun that it will definitely become a yearly activity for us!

First Day of School!! We just barely made it before the sun came up and blasted us in the face....no squinty eyes this year! Its still such a shock to me that Johnny is in Kindergarten and Mellany is in her last year at the elementary school (she will go to the intermediate school next year)!!

Mellany couldn't wait to help Johnny get on and off the bus. She told him all the rules the night before and he was ready! She is just the best big sister!

Lots of tears for mama once this boy got on (with no hesitation) and the bus drove off!

Charlie had no idea what to do with them both gone....

....he wasn't mad that he could choose to watch whatever he wanted though...

Johnny's teacher sent us a few pics from the day....

And they are home!!!

Showing off his kindergarten crown

After dinner we drove to get ice cream...Johnny's idea that he had requested days before

Yearly questionnaires....Mellany is now to the point that she doesn't even need help with it anymore...

Ready for day 2 and our first set of bus stop selfies

...Charlie still wasn't sure what to do without the big kids, but a cake pop in the car and playing outside with mom helps!...

We ended the week with a low key pizza and movie night!

It may be sad but it does feel good to be back into a "normal" routine. Both kids really love their teachers and even get to be in class with Simon & Charlotte! (Which is especially good this year because each class is kind of in it's own "bubble" during the day. They eat together, play together, have specials in their room, etc. etc.)

Here's to hoping we have in-person school all year long and restrictions can start being lifted somewhat soon!
